DepEd Bicol spearheads “Summit of the Consciences for the Climate”

To foster the mobilization of concerted efforts on a global scale to bring about real and
lasting solutions to combat the effects of climate change, the Department of Education
Regional Office No.V has spearheaded the “Summit of the Consciences for the Climate”
held at the 3rd Floor Function Hall, RELC Dorm, Rawis, Legazpi City last October 12, 2015.

The memorandum signed by DepED Regional Director Ramon Fiel G. Abcede stipulated
the objectives of the summit; (1) reiterate and reinforce the implementation of Climate
Change Adaptation (CCA) in Education; (2) strengthen local partnership in terms of CCA
implementation and (3) initiate the active engagement of children in advocating CCA.

Participants to the activity were the Schools Division Superintendents of the 13 division
offices, Division DRR Coordinators, Federated PTA presidents, Local Government Unit
(LGU) representatives and Supreme Student Government (SSG) presidents.

Albay Public Safety and Emergency Management Office (APSEMO) Chief Dr. Cedric
Daep served as the guest speaker. “Climate change is already unavoidable so investing in
empowerment among the people through universal education should be given top priority in
all CCA efforts. Education is considered an essential element of the global response
because it helps young people understand and address the impact of global warming,
encourages changes in their attitudes and behavior and helps them adapt to climate
change-related trends”, says Daep.

The activity ended with a commitment signing by all the participants to show their full
support to this advocacy of the Department of Education in ensuring that access to quality
learning is provided and prioritized despite disasters and/or emergencies.
